Andrology refers to the medical speciality that deals with men's health, especially reproductive health of men. Andrologists are doctors with special expertise in this field. Clinical assessment of the male partner, evaluation of sexual problems, semen analysis, imaging tests to look for reproductive problems, counselling, testicular biopsy, testicular sperm extraction are part of an andrologist's work.
Semen analysis (testing) is necessary to determine the number and quality of sperms. The sample is usually evaluated for the following
Morphology of sperms
Motility of sperms
If the semen analysis is abnormal, life style modifications are first suggested and it is generally repeated in 4-6 weeks to see if it is persistent. The semen abnormalities may correct themselves. If they do not, additional tests may be required. An abnormal semen analysis does not always mean you will be infertile. It may take a longer period for conception. The female partner is also generally tested to ensure that there are no coexistent causes. If after adequate trial, you are still unable to succeed, assisted reproductive techniques such as IUI, IVF or ICSI may be beneficial.
If sperms are not found in the ejaculate, it may still be possible to extract them from the testis by a simple procedure called testicular sperm extraction (TESE). This is a minimally invasive simple procedure done with a small stab by our experienced and skilled andrologists.
